Frequently Asked Questions

All of our courses are designed for people with absolutely zero experience with tools and making things. We will teach you everything you know to make sure you get the most you can from all of our workshops.
All of our workshops have a maximum number of 4 students, so there is lots of opportunity for one-on-one instruction.
If you are really nervous about your lack of experience and you want to do a workshop that focuses purely on learning skills and safety with tools, we recommend having a look at our Ground Up: Getting Started With Tools workshop.
If you want to have a chat about your skills and what workshop(s) might best suit you, feel free to send us a message or give us a ring! -
Aside from the minimum age requirement being 18 years old, anyone can sign up for any of our workshops!

Most Ground Up workshops are held in our workshop in nipaluna/Hobart. Some of our larger carpentry courses, including deck-building and timber framing, combine workshop-based learning with hands-on site experience. In these courses, you'll spend time both in the workshop and on active project sites located within approximately 20 minutes of Hobart.

That's great! We'd love to have you along.
While our workshops are designed with beginners in mind, they are equally valuable for people who already have some experience and want to build on their existing skills.
With a maximum class size of just four participants, there is plenty of opportunity for one-on-one instruction and personalised guidance. This allows us to tailor aspects of the learning experience to your interests, skill level, and goals.
If you're already comfortable with the basics, we can help you refine your techniques, improve accuracy and efficiency, and deepen your understanding of tools and materials.
No matter where you're starting from, there's always something new to learn. The goal isn't simply to complete a project, it's to continue developing your skills, confidence, and capability as a maker.

Great news!
We provide all the tools, materials, and safety equipment required for the workshop. All you'll need is:
Lunch (or a plan for lunch)
Sturdy, closed-toe footwear
Comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, stained, or occasionally scuffed
Weather-appropriate clothing if you're attending one of our primarily site-based workshops
If you already own tools such as drills, drivers, jigsaws, or circular saws and would like to become more confident using them, you're welcome to bring them along. Learning on the tools you'll be using at home can be a great way to build familiarity and confidence.
Once you enroll, you'll receive an information pack containing everything you need to know, including workshop times, locations, and any course-specific information.
If you have any questions before the workshop, don't hesitate to get in touch.
